Vincent's Story
Vincent is a young dog, still a puppy really, that was shot by a pellet rifle and left paralyzed in his hind legs. After that, he was also hit by a car! An animal lover notified IRO but because our rescue center is full to capacity we were unable to rescue him as an official IRO recue. Nonetheless, our Rescue Team members decided to try to save Vincent on their own. They immediately took him to a veterinary clinic to be checked out. Tests and x-rays were done, and pain reliever was given as Vincent was suffering a great deal of pain.
The vet says that the bullet is lodged in Vincent's spinal column and that surgery to remove it would be too invasive and may kill him, and as there's no chance of him ever regaining the use of his hind legs as the nerve is damaged, there's no point in operating. It's apparently an aluminum pellet so there's little danger of it reacting with Vincent's body and causing problems later. Vincent's skin is covered with infected wounds and scrapes from the car accident, but other than that he's in good overall health: his blood count and liver & kidney test results are all normal. He also has control over his bowel and bladder functions, so there's a good prospect of him living a long, happy life. Meanwhile Vincent is still at Cebu Veterinary Doctors' main clinic in Cebu City while his infection is being treated and his pain managed. He's also undergoing a quarantine period and will eventually receive his 5-in-1 and rabies vaccinations.
We have a wheelchair available for Vincent if it will fit him, and if not we plan to have one custom-made. Vincent will be one of the first dogs on wheels to be seen in Cebu!
